John Beilein Michigan Set Play for Trey Burke by Adam Short

Offensive Drills

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

John Beilein Michigan Set Play for Trey Burke

-The past few nights I have been studying Michigan’s game film from last season. The first thing that impressed me is their floor spacing. Their floor spacing allowed Trey Burke to get into the lane and allowed him to do what he does best. The play I am presenting to you is based off their main offense. The play starts off by Burke hitting Robinson on the wing. Hardaway cuts to the ball side corner. Burke fakes a basket cut and pops back up to get the ball from Robinson. Option one: Morgan is sprinting to set a down screen for Stauskas, Stauskas is reading his man. If his man is hugged up on him, he will curl the down screen. Burke will hit him; Stauskas is looking to make a play. Option two: Morgan sprints to set a down screen for Stauskas and his defender is playing up the line. Stauskas will basket cut. Morgan will then sprint up to set a ball screen for Burke. Trey Burke is looking to get to the basket. Option three: Morgan sprints to set a down screen for Stauskas and his defender is playing up the line. Stauskas will basket cut. Morgan will pop to the elbow. Trey Burke will hit Morgan, Burke will run off of Morgan for a handoff; Trey Burke is looking to make a play. I love this play. I think you can use this as a set play. You have to have smart players to make the different reads. It puts the 2 man’s defender in a tough position. If he is hugged up on the 2 man; the man 2 will curl the screen. This will force the 5 man’s defender to help on the curl, leaving the 5 man open for a drop off from the 2. If 2’s defender is playing up the line, 2 will basket cut. This will force 5’s defender to help for a second on the basket cut. This will make it impossible for the 5’s defender to help on the ball screen or the handoff on the elbow.
