I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Ed Cooley is one of college basketball’s most underrated x and o coaches. His skill for drawing up after timeout sets was on full display this past weekend against a very good Marquette team. With 10.3 seconds left in the half and up 8, Providence had the ball underneath their own hoop and needed to go the length of the court. Cooley drew up a wonderful play that led to an open corner 3. The play took less than 6 seconds to execute. While the shot did not go in, it was a well drawn up and executed play by the Friars.

Cooley may be one of the most underappreciated coaches in the whole country. While he certainly is known as a great coach in the northeast and Big East conference, I am not sure he is as well known around the country. Providence is not an easy job, and all Cooley has managed to do is to take the Friars to 5 consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

Providence ultimately lost the game, being outscored 54-35 in the 2nd half dropping the Friars to 11-7 on the season and 1-4 in conference. While the win gave the #15 Marquette Golden Eagles their 15th win of the season to just 3 losses, and kept them a 0.5 game back in the Big East standings.
