I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Billy Donovan Florida Ball Screen Offense Plays by Adam Short

I have to apologize for not contributing to the website lately, just like any coach I have been crazy busy with preseason basketball. The Grizzlies just returned from Dallas this weekend where we really played well at times. We went 5-0 for the weekend beating some really good teams. However, we have areas that we MUST get better at. Since I have been here at West Plains, I have really been studying ball screen offenses. Two questions you must ask against any ball screen offense; who is plugging and who is pulling. Those two questions have helped me to understand how to run/defend ball screen offense. The two plays I am posting are from the Florida Gators whom I think have the best coach in the game, Billy Donovan. Coach Donovan is the best ball screen offense coach in the game today. The first play is out of a Horns looks with a cross action with the guards. After 2 and 3 cross, 4 will set a ball screen for 1. X4 will have to hedge the ball screen while X1 fights over the top of the screen. 4 will roll; X5 will have to PULL to 4. 5 will then set a ball screen for 1. X5 will have to hedge. X1 will have to fight over the top of the screen. X4 will have to retreat back to 4. After 5 sets the ball screen he will roll to the basket. 4 will pop up. If X4 stays with 4 and X2 doesn’t PULL over, 5 will be open for a dunk. IF X2 pulls over and takes 5, 2 will be open for a shot. IF X4 pulls and takes 5 on the roll, 4 will be open. This will cause X2 to take 4. 4 will swing the ball to 2 for either a shot or drive to the basket. The next play is an Out Of Bounds play that Florida runs. 1 will slice over the top of 4 and 5. 3 will slice underneath. If 1 is open 2 will hit him. If X1 does a good job of denying 1, 5 will pop up and get the ball from 2. If 5 gets the ball from 2, 5 will hit 1 on the wing. 5 will follow his pass and will set a ball screen on 1. X5 will have to hedge. X1 will fight over the top of the screen. X3 will be the PLUG man. After 5 sets the ball screen for 1, 5 will roll to the basket. 2 will pop up to the right wing. IF X2 stays with 2, 5 will be open for a dunk. IF X2 stays with 5, 2 will be open for a shot.
