Auburn Flex Action by Chris Filios
Auburn runs some old school offense with a modern twist. It is rare in basketball today to see anyone running the Flex offense. At one time, it was a very popular offense. Auburn basketball got in their time machine to go back in the past and has brought Auburn Flex to the future…with some tweaks. They use many of the same actions, but now using modern spacing and minor action tweaks. Auburn coach Bruce Pearl went back to his time as an assistant with Dr. Tom Davis at Iowa. Auburn’s version of the Flex offense also has nods to the Swing offense run by Bo Ryan at Wisconsin. Ryan used some of the concepts from the original Flex offense to create the Swing. In addition to some Swing concepts, Pearl mixes in stagger screens and pick and roll concepts to fit into the modern game.

In the first 4 years of his tenure at Auburn, Pearl’s team has made great jumps on the offense end of the floor. Each of the past 3 seasons, they have ranked in the top 35 of adjusted offensive efficiency. This led to Auburn’s first trip to the Final Four in 2019 and was one of the last unbeaten teams during the 2020 season.
