Frank Martin College Basketball Tips

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

-Prepare kids to succeed
– Don’t miss on opportunity to work with 14-18 year olds
– Everything I teach is the same as when I coached in high school
– Coach what fits your personality
*2 things you must do any time you shoot
Get on the glass (extra shots)
Get fouls, defense panics and will foul

– Commit to rebounding or transition defense; Don’t be a team that’s in between
– Pressure makes you GREAT or makes you QUIT
– Apply as much pressure as you can
Pressure on each other
Pressure offense & pressure defense
If they’re going to be better than us then they need to be great to beat us

– On the shot: 3, 4, & 5 man “opposite & inside” – Rt side shot all 3 in the paint on the left side to rebound
– Most teams send PG to half court and 2 guard to top of key; He sends both to the elbows. Puts the pressure on the defense – Must get offensive rebounds
Take ownership of your effort | (Frank Martin College Basketball Tips)

– It’s not what defense you run, must get players in the spots necessary and be effective at it
– Doesn’t matter what zone/man you play as long as players are aggressive
#1 Don’t let you players get put on rotations
#2 Don’t put players in close out situations
Further out the closeout, better chance the offense has advantage

-Def Concepts | Frank Martin College Basketball Tips
Keep ball out of middle of court
Aggressive defense
No 3’s No Layups Tough 2’s
Contest every shot
Force long passes; Better chance to win
Speed you up
No trapping = Rotations
Make them dribble (extra dribble)
Must play 1 on 1
Might get beat but stay aggressive
Go deep into the bench & force opponent to do the same
Keep it competitive
