Bill Salyers Alabama Zone Offense Part 2 by Mark Chapman

Quick Hitters Plays by Mark Chapman

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Bill Salyers Alabama Zone Offense Part 2 by Mark Chapman

IV. The Bama Zone Offense | Bill Salyers Alabama Zone Offense
– 1 man is set to the right side, outside the lane line
– 2 man is even with one man in a two guard front
– 3 man is on the right wing
– 4 & 5 man are slightly above the block in the low post

Initial movement | Bill Salyers Alabama Zone Offense
– 1 man passes to 3 on the wing and exchanges with 2 man
– 4 man (or opposite post player) flashes to ball side high post
– This should set up 3 guards, a high post, and a low post on the ball side
– 3 man should be a good shooter so the defense must respect the shot
– Overloading the zone: this puts 4 offensive players on the ball side of the floor and gives the offense an extra player that the defense can’t guard

Second movement | Bill Salyers Alabama Zone Offense
– 3 man should look to 5 in the low post or the 4 at the high post
– If 4 man receives that pass he has a few options:
Look for 5 man sealing the defense
Drive to the basket, down the lane
Skip to 1 man on opposite wing (1 & 2 man have shifted to opposite side of the floor)
– If the 3 man can’t enter it to either post he looks to skip to 1 man on opposite wing or reverse it through the 2 man and then to the 1.
This forces the zone to flatten out
– Once the ball has reversed to the other side of the floor to one man the following movements will occur
4 curl cuts to ball side block
3 man flashes to ball side high post
2 man fill back side wing that is open from 3 man flash
– Look to feed the 3 man at the high post or skip to 2 man
– 4 man steps to short corner (or corner if in range), 5 man goes to ball side block to for the overload against the zone again
– If 3 man doesn’t get the ball at the high post he steps out to the perimeter, look to reverse the ball to 2 man on opposite side of floor
– As the ball is reversed to the 2 man, the 4 flashes to the ball side high post and the 5 man flashes to the ball side block: 1 and 3 interchange on the back side

I have attached diagrams to go along with this post to hopefully allow you to see the flow of the continuity. The ultimate goal is to get kids to read the defense and make the appropriate read of where the ball should go. The next post (Part 3) will cover what each player should do and their responsibilities.

We have a new basketball coaching contributor in Mark Chapman He is doing an excellent job in providing basketball coaching clinic notes, basketball drills, and basketball plays. He is the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Hamilton Township High School in Columbus, Ohio. I think that you will enjoy these basketball clinic notes on the zone offense.
