2011 South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Clinic Notes by Jonathan Gatlin

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

2011 South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association Clinic Notes by Jonathan Gatlin

Clinic notes from the 2011 South Dakota High School Basketball Coaches Association in Sioux Falls, SD at Lincoln High School. Speakers that attended this clinic: Scott Duncan, Assistant Men’s Coach at Wyoming, Ryun Williams, Head Women’s Coach at University of South Dakota, Greg Lansing, Head Coach at Indiana State, Rob Jeter, Head Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Carl Pierson, High School Basketball Coach and the author of the book The Politics of Coaching, and Mike Neighbors, Assistant Coach with the University of Washington Women’s basketball program. This clinic combines high school coaches and has a nice mix between head and assistant coaches.

The way this clinic notes was constructed is the coaches will give some insight about what there speaking topic is and then they give us x’s and o’s that correspond with the topic. One coach’s notes that intrigue me are Coach Carl Pierson because his topic is very interesting. Coach Pierson topic ‘When Parents Attack: How to Keep Your Job’, he gives 7 points. 1. Combustible Coaching Climate, 2. 3 This That Kill Coaches, 3. Communication, 4. Quick Tips for Better Communication, 5. Managing Expectations, 6. Keeping Crazy Parents in Check, and 7. Quick Tips for Parent Confrontation. I wanted to all you guys to enjoy these notes because they are very good, I truly enjoyed them. Coaches, I hope you learn from these notes, enjoy them, and hopefully they help you continue on your road to coaching success!

Jonathan Gatlin is a recent graduate of North Carolina State University finishing with a major in Sport Management and a minor in Coaching Education. He has worked for AAU programs, coached intramural athletics, and worked various basketball camps. He is a student of the game looking to further his coaching career as a Graduate Assistant. “Teaching the game, Training for life”. I think that you will love his notes from Pete Carril.
