Tubby Smith Texas Tech University Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Jump to the ball with a purpose (when your man makes a pass) try to get a piece of the ball
When guarding the ball:

o if the offense raises the ball above his head, defense should pressure up and have high hands
without standing up, to prepare to defend a shot or deflect a pass
o If the offense drops the ball, defense should step back and prepare for the drive
Close out low and wide

If ball is above the free throw line extended, weak side defenders can play 1 step inside the
lane

On a post entry, it is the post defender’s responsibility to take away the baseline (help is
coming from the middle

o Automatic trap on post entry if the catch is 1 step off the block and in
“55” = full court man

o Looking to trap the “uncontrolled” dribble (ex. Player turns his back to help side defender on
the sideline with a spin dribble)

Don’t dribble on a steal, look to pass it ahead
Always close out on inside shoulder when in the full court

Automatic traps Backcourt
o Ball is isolated (i.e. all offensive players cleared out)
o Ball is caught in deep corner or below the block
o Ball is caught under the backboard
o At half court
