Swarm Defense created by Wayne Walters

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

September 1, 2008

1. Players do not help early enough because we ask them to both help and recover.

2. Players do not pressure the ball because we ask them to stay between the player and the ball. Essentially, guard drive lt, rt and jump shoot.

4. Both are Mission Difficult even if we are athletically equal … Mission Impossible if our opponents are skilled, athletic and more experienced.

5. The SWARM requires players to do one thing well. On the ball, Force … be high and tight on one side, take long slides using a kick step technique, to push players in one direction, stay back hip to prevent change of direction. When one Pass off the ball, Open Stance or Full Front in order to help quickly. Help players are never asked initially to return to original player. Players two passes away are asked to sprint in preset rotations to cover players normally open versus help and recover.

6. If that is all we did then the SWARM would be no different than a true trapping defense … I have a two unique ways to prevent playing 4 on 3 after the offense breaks the help double

7. This defense allows five less athletic players playing together to negate more athletic opponents.

PS Eventually, all basketball teams will be divided into teams playing the SWARM and winning and those being defeated by it!! Get on the bus!!
