Quick Hitters Plays by Mark Chapman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Sideline Touches Drill / Baby J’s Xavier Musketeer Newsletter

I picked this drill up from the Xavier coach’s newsletter and Head Coach Chris Mack. I’m always looking for ways to develop my players, both guards and big men, and have found that many of the drills Coach Mack and his staff use are very effective. This can be used as a starter Sideline Touches Drill at the beginning of practice or in the offseason during skill development.

Player sprints to right sideline, touches, then runs to the 12ft mark in front of the rim to receive a pass from under the basket. After the shot the shooter gets his own rebound and returns the ball to the passer and sprints to the opposite sideline and back to the 12ft mark on the left side. Shooter should get 12 shots (6 shots on each side) and then rotate with other players in the group. I like to have players as the passers so they develop the skills necessary to get the ball to a teammate in a position to score.  The Sideline Touches Drill is a great drill.

Part two of the drill is similar. Player starts in the corner along the baseline and jogs to half court. He touches half court with his foot, turns and sprints to the basket on 45 degree angle. He receives a pass from the coach (or teammate) who is standing on the elbow. Player starts new line in opposite corner.

Player shoots (6) shots on each side – a one dribble power layup, a one dribble single leg layup, a one dribble stride stop step thru, a bank shot with no dribble, catching at 28ft. and dribbling across the lane for a baby hook, catching at the 20ft mark and passing back then receiving pass for no dribble lay up. (12 total shots taken).

This Sideline Touches Drill can obviously be adjusted to fit what you would like to see your players accomplish or the number of reps you’d like to see them achieve. As with any drill, it works best when you adjust it to fit you, your philosophy, and your players!

We have a new basketball coaching contributor in Mark Chapman He is doing an excellent job in providing basketball coaching clinic notes, basketball drills, and basketball plays. He is the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at Hamilton Township High School in Columbus, Ohio. I think that you will enjoy these basketball clinic notes on the zone offense.
