Roy Williams Secondary Break at 2013 Nike Basketball Clinic

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Against popular belief…”You can have control as a coach if you run”

2 biggest factors in increasing offensive possessions | 2013 Nike Basketball Clinic
1. Rebounding
2. Shot Quality

Caution

Don’t be married to the way you want to play. Sometime it doesn’t work.

Accountability Shot Selection
Stop practice to stress shot selection (empower don’t threaten/ Good better Best)

Players have must understand that there are good shots and bad shots and that those shots vary based on who is taking them.

Hubie Brown said “ A shooter can make up for a multitude of sins”

Tips for running efficiently | 2013 Nike Basketball Clinic
1. Work at running after the make
a. Closest big takes out the ball
2. Attacking quickly alleviates pressure IF you finish
3. PG must be able to stop and change directions

Best offense vs. the press
1. Don’t let them score
2. Attack with speed and look to score on the backend

Primary Break | 2013 Nike Basketball Clinic
1. 2 or fewer defenders back
2. 2 or fewer passes to score

If 2 defenders are back: Make top player commit

If only 1 defender is back: Players should give the ball up early and ball should never be passed backward.

Secondary Break: Allows teams to score quickly when 3, 4, or 5 defenders are back.

Utilizing the post in secondary transition | 2013 Nike Basketball Clinic
1. Teach post players to seal in transition
2. Teach perimeter players to read how the post is being guarded (if post is fronted skip ball to entry)

Learning to get open

One of the greatest things you can do on offense is be a good actor
