Escape Pressing Drills

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Princeton Hybrid Offense Cycles

These are a set of drills designed to be used once players have begun to understand varying entries and actions within the Princeton Hybrid Offense. These drills give a team a chance to work on these within a full court setting. Although the Princeton Hybrid offense has a reputation as being a slow deliberate offense , that eats time off the clock, we want to emphasize to our teams that we are looking to quick strike and still score early in the possession.

The Cycle Drills are broken up into 3 different sets.

The First set, Fast Lane, is working primarily on teaching the players how to run their lanes. It also focuses on quick entries and long pitch ahead passes up the court. This set is a team favorite. It is a drill that was used back in the Loyola Marymount days. We have adapted it to fit the 4 guard personnel within the Princeton Hybrid Offense.

The second set, Up Town, focuses on different entries and actions that result in a basket at the rim.
Entries covered in Up Town Cycle:
1. Pass to Wing
2. Throw and Go
3. Thru
4. Forwards Out
5. Fist
Actions covered in Up Town Cycle:
1. Post Feed
2. Backdoor on PTSA or PTOT
3. Slip
4. Spin
5. Fist to Point
The Third and Final Cycle, Downtown, focuses on 5 different entries and actions that will result in three point opportunities within the Princeton Hybrid Offense.
Entries covered in Downtown Cycle:
1. Shallow
2. Dribble Wing
3. Dribble 1
4. X
5. 5
Scoring actions covered in Downtown Cycle:
1. Pop on PTOT
2. Pop on PTSA
3. ALLEY shot on PTOT
4. Slot shot on PTSA
5. Drift three

I have also added a section that includes variations on these drills and how a coach can increase the difficulty or add a simple element to change the focus of the drill. I believe these drills are adaptable to any and all styles of plays. The varying entries and actions help to reinforce what players should be looking for in offensive possessions.
