NBA Scoring Opportunities by Screening – Ron Sen

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

The Boston Celtics, like all NBA teams, rely on screens to create scoring opportunities. Often, the simplest plays, combining screening and cutting create the highest quality shots.

Against Indiana, Jeff Green (4) passed into Kevin Garnett (5) with the defense expecting a Paul Pierce (3) isolation from the left mid to high post. The Celtics crossed them up with Green cutting off the Pierce backscreen resulting in a last second layup off the Garnett lob.

Last night against Toronto, coming out of a timeout, the Celtics ran a minor variation. Jordan Crawford (3) popped to the three point line for a pass from Courtney Lee (1). Lee then got the backscreen from Brandon Bass (4) for an alley-oop dunk.
