Lamar University Blob Set Play by Mark Chapman
I picked this base line play up while watching Lamar University play Indiana. They are a scrappy team that battled back multiple times to throughout the game to keep it close until the end. When playing teams that are better than you it’s important that you have good Base Line Out of Bounds plays, Side Line plays, and quick hitters when you need a bucket. The advantage of a Base line play is that you’re close to your basket and you have the ability to put players where you want them as opposed to live play where players end up all over. Don’t let this part of the game become a “just get it in” mentality. Teach your players “We want to score” out of these sets.
Lamar University ran this set late in the game when they were down by a few and it really helped them stay close with Indiana. The key is to be patient on the second screen and make sure that both the screener and the cutter work to run the defender into the screen. If the defender gets a clean run without getting hit chances are the post defenders won’t be out of position for the second part.
If the post seal isn’t open then a back screen and roll should happen with the post players giving the inbounder two options. If nothing else is available then 2 should sprint to mid court and the long pass should be made.
