I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Joe Callero Cal Poly Mustangs Set Plays by Wes Kosel

Attached are two set plays from Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero. Callero is in his 6th season as head coach of the Mustangs. The Mustangs had an remarkable post-season last year winning the Big West Conference Tournament and earning themselves an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the opening round, the Mustangs beat Texas Southern to get into the Round of 64. There they met Wichita State who ended the season for the Mustangs. This season, Cal Poly is 2-1 with wins over San Francisco State and Delaware. The Mustangs will be tested on Wednesday against a very good Cal Bears team.

Before taking over for Cal Poly, Callero was the head coach at Seattle (NCAA DII and D1) and Puget Sound (NCAA DIII). In his coaching career, he has won 216 games, won 1 conference tournament championship, and a Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season championship while at Seattle.

Joe Callero Cal Poly Mustangs Set Plays – 1-4 Triple Screen
In this play, 1 passes to 3 cutting to the wing. Once 3 has the ball, 2 moves down to the low block underneath 5. 3 looks inside to 4 posting up, but if he isn’t open 4 steps out to the corner. 3 passes to 4, then moves down to set a triple staggered screen with 1 and 5 for 2. 2 cuts off of the screen looking for a shot.

1 dribbles from left to right looking to get to the elbow. 3 sets a cross screen for 4 in the opposite corner. If 4’s defender jumps out to the corner, 3 sets a screen for 4 to cut to the basket. If 4’s defender steps up on 1 penetrating, 3 slips behind the defender to open up the lob to 4 at the basket.

Wes Kosel is an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas, and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
