Dwight Howard Orlando Magic Go-Round SLOB
Adam Spinella
In looking at end game alley oops from the sideline, they’re usually designed for the best dunker or leaper on the court. In a game against the Magic, there’s no secret who that is – Dwight Howard. It’s still possible for the offense to target Howard’s defender, Tim Duncan in this scenario, and free up Howard by making Duncan read the play from the backside and see a lot of action coming towards him.
Here’s the Orlando Magic situation:
-Tie game with less than a second left, the Magic try to go to the best dunker on the court, Dwight Howard, for an alley oop. Hedo Turkoglu is the inbounder.
Nelson (1) sets a down screen for Redick (3). Arroyo (2) fakes baseline, then turns back to the corner. Howard (5) sets a diagonal screen for Nelson to go to the ball-side block, then curls himself for lob at the rim. Turkoglu threw a pass only where Howard could get it. The entire time, Turkoglu was watching and hoping that Howard’s defender would make the slightest show towards Nelson off the diagonal screen, assuming that this was going to be a simple “screen-the-screener” set.
Here is video of the Orlando Magic play taking place. Watch how wide Howard makes his curl, getting Duncan, his defender, to jump out and expose the rim slightly.
