I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Defensive Rotation Drills

I hope everyone is having a great holiday season. We have seen a lot of good college basketball this season. Obliviously the rule changes have made the scoring go up. I know a lot of coaches have mixed feelings on the hand check rule. Whether you like the rule or not, there is one thought you cannot argue. The new hand check rules put a premium on weak-side rotations. Ball handlers can get past the defender at will. This puts added pressure on the help defenders to rotate properly. We have spent a lot of time this year at IU Southeast emphasizing Defensive Rotation Drills. We know that we are going to get beat off the dribble occasionally. What we do is dictate the direction that we get beat. We force the offense to beat us sideline and baseline. Even when we get beat we are still in control. We know that help side rotations are going to come. Our help side defenders know exactly where the ball will be driven and what rotations to make. Below are some Defensive Rotation Drills that we do to help us work on our rotations. We will incorporate rebounding and even some Attack and React aspects into the drills so they don’t get stale. You will see in the drills that everything is baseline and sideline. Our rule of thumbs is that if you get beat baseline it is the help defenders fault, and if you get beat middle it is the ball defenders fault.
