Defending Dribble Hand Offs by Andrew Grantz

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Defending Dribble Hand Offs

One action that is starting to become more used in basketball is the dribble hand-offs. Calipari ran this very well at kentucky last season. He could put Anthony Davis in situations to hand off and roll for a dunk or pop for a shot. This action has so many different ways to defend it. Below are 5 of the differernt ways to stop a dribble hand off. I think the best way to defend it is not to schedule a team with a player like Anthony Davis. Other than that it will depend on the other teams personel and your own personal coaching philosophies. I think the trap option is good with youth teams, since most kids aren’t strong enough to handle pressure.
