Tips for coaching youth basketball

coaching youth basketball

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. Full court press but change it up

Youth basketball is a learning phase so treat it like one. Your coaching career might soar if your team plays against weaker ones with full-court presses but bigger teams will use this to their advantage. It is the job of the coach to teach all there is about basketball to the youth. Full court press helps win games but half-court defense and offense are what comes handy on the court.

The purpose of coaching youth basketball is to show them how the game is played; not how it is won every time. Spend time on teaching how to trap and get steals but do not focus on it all the time.
