Basketball Coaching Clinic Notes | Chris Beard UNLV Final Four Notes by Zak Boisvert
Chris Beard broke his right hand last month while attempting to motivate his players at Arkansas-Little Rock during halftime of the Sun Belt Conference tournament championship, where he joked that he lost his fight with a whiteboard.
The 43 year old new UNLV basketball coach must have learned from that incident, beacause he knocked his first press conference out of the park at Mendenhall Center for his intorductory press conference. Coach Beard told the media that he was back on a basketball court where he is comfortable and has dedicated his whole life. That he looks forward to getting it done here at a high level on this court and the Thomas & Mack.
Chris Beard is a regular guy that believes in one thing above maye anything. That there is a relationship between hard work and results. He has worked his whole life and the results speak for themselves, that he is a grinder and that’s a huge compliment to him. Coach Beard never had anyone in the coaching business to help him get started. He didn’t have a father, uncle, relative in the basketball coaching business and we all know how hard it can be to break in the business.
He has vowed to embrace the tradition of UNLV and reach out to every former player. He promised the media unfettered access to his program. Even through they only have three scholarship players currently on the roster, he has guaranteed winning immediately. He believes in UNLV and Las Vegas.
Coach Beard knows how to turn a program around. Two years ago, he set a school record for victories at Texas Division II college Angelo State, which was coming off three straight losing seasons. Then when he was at Arkansas-Little Rock where he coached college basketball’s largest turnaround – from 13 wins two years ago to 30 victories this season — and the school’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory.
Recruiting won’t be a problem for Coach Beard. He believes in the three seniors and that they will fill out the team for next year.
