Brendan Suhr 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

BRENDAN SUHR (Chuck Daly’s asst. coach with Detroit and he played for Hubie Brown)

QUESTION: Would you or could you play for yourself?

1. Best at Player/Coach relationships | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Coach K
• Doc Rivers
• Geno Auriema
• Greg Popovich
Obviously successful coaches. This is what it is all about.

2. PRACTICE (legs at end of year mind and legs go hand in hand) | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Evaluate
• Time
• Cut it down as season goes along
• LEGS (After pre-season in lockout year Daly did not practice one time)
• Practice smart and efficiently
• Teach both sides of the ball at the same time

3. MEETINGS: all attention spans are short | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• 13 clips of film max
• Learning must take place in film: not punishments
• ANGER LEAVES SCARS
• Shout praise and whisper criticism
• In an NBA season there are 2800 meetings which include time outs quarters etc. You better be able to teach in one to two minute increments.

4. EXECUTION | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Teach well
• Be prepared

5. BELIEF SYSTEM | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• What do I stand for?
• Offense
• Defense
• You get buy in with belief. Your best player needs to buy in and the rest will follow

6. OFFENSE: | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Dangerous time is the off season and going to clinics
• Must fit talent
• Take bits and pieces to put into your pot
• Can you compete with the best teams with your style? (Hubie Brown tenant Who cares if it works against Country Day? It must work against Dematha)
• Pistons played a play-off style all season so they didn’t have to change in the play offs.
• Don’t change vs weak teams
• FAST BREAK
• M2M stuff?
• You need a PNR attack if not you better learn quickly
• Baseline screens for shooters
• Do I have 3-5 plays for my best player?
• CRUNCH TIME OFFENSE: developed in preseason but saved for when you really need it
• ZONE O: How many?
• PRESS O: How many?
• SPECIAL SITUATIONS: Are you drawing stuff up in the dirt or is this something your kids have run before?

7. DEFENSE | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Guard the ball
• PNR
• Post D
• Best player defense: Box-1 Tri-2
• Out of Bounds

8. DISCIPLINE vs STANDARDS RULES vs PRINCIPLES | 2014 Coaching U Live Basketball Clinic Notes
• Help win games
• Coach K Gold Standards: Be on time. No excuses, RESPECT THE GAME
• Vision for the program and seeing ahead: What can happen at 2:00 a.m. and how will you deal with it?

College professors with PHD’s don’t care what grades their students get. Your players had better get an A in your class!

Note: I would recommend reading the book Brendan wrote about Chuck Daly. You can only get it on the iPad. One of the best coaching books I have ever read.
