Bob Knight 2014 Nike Las Vegas Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Teaching Players How To Play | Nike Las Vegas Clinic
Timing is everything both on the court and off of the court. DON’T over coach, DON’T over practice.

When your players are in the gym make sure they have a culture of working.
• Specialize shot work based on position

Utilize advantage/disadvantage scenarios in practice | Nike Las Vegas Clinic
• Makes players play harder
• 3 on 3 is harder to defend than 5 on 5
o Choose a scenario

  • Basket drives and three pointers only
  • Only dribble pull ups
  • Limited Dribbles
  • Make a certain number of passes

• 5-4 situations
o Advantage Offense

  • Teaches defensive communication and rotations

o Advantage Defense

  • Teaches offense execution and how to play against pressure and trap situations

As a coach making practices more difficult than games teaches your players concentration and execution.
Use Guided 5 on 5 Scrimmages in Practices
• Spacing is essential 20feet from each player no lower 6ft above baseline
• No Dribble 5 on 5
o Emphasizes Cutting, Passing, and Screening
• 5 on 5 Point only Dribble
o Allows practice on drive and kick
• 5 on 5 CHANGE (HC and Full Court)
o Allows for scramble defensive scenarios
o Can guard same or find a different man

  • Forces scramble communication
  • Allows offense to read attack situations

Words and wisdom | Nike Las Vegas Clinic

• Always be working for spacing.
• The weakest thing in basketball today is secondary defense or help defense
• The two most important words on defense are HELP and RECOVER
• If you can make more FTs than your opponent shoots it is a tremendous
Playing against Zone D
• Work against Zone D every night
o Sometimes passing only
o Sometimes dribble only
o Shot fakes make for great shots against the zone
o Drive at the weakside guard on the ball reversal to free up the passing lane
o Never dribble or pass in the same direction from where you got the ball from (forces the defense into difficult rotations
o Goal is to make 2 guard 1
