Billy Donovan Florida Post Workout

Offensive Drills

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Billy Donovan’s Guard Workout

Last week I posted a guard workout from Billy Donovan; the post workout is just as good. I like this post workout because it has everything big needs in their game. Also, it is an excellent conditioning drill. This drill is loaded with tons of shooting and ball handling drills for your bigs to get better. Coaches, while you are putting your players through these drills, you need to emphasize a few key fundamentals. You want to make sure your bigs to stay low time when doing their drills. You want to teach them how to rim run on the transition drill. Coaches, it is a must that you teach proper footwork when the player is making their moves in the post. On the boxing out part of the drill, coaches must teach the way they want their players to box out the defender. Stress it every time they work out so it becomes a habit. On the shooting part of the drill, you want to stress whatever footwork you use in your program. I would use the “quick stop” footwork for our guys. Every time a player catches the ball; I am making sure they are catching it at the bottom on their shoot. On the shot fake/pull up part of the drill, I am making sure my players are either using their direct step or their cross over step to get by their defender. If my players don’t use the proper footwork, I will not count their make. As a coach, I believe post workout footwork is important to building a winning culture. Whatever footwork you preach, hold your players accountable when doing this workout.
