Basketball Plays | Sideline Out of Bounds Play by Al Cuevas

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Sideline out of bounds and late game situations.

We like to set up our sideline out of bounds from the same set every time and run different reads from that set. We feel that if we run a certain play off of our set all game long, by the end of the game our opponents will be cheating and that is when we can run our counters.

Our basic set is two guards spread out around the 10-foot volleyball line with two bigs on the blocks. Our best shooter always takes the ball out of bounds. We also change up who sets up where, especially when we get to league and teams have scouted us much more.

The basic play that we run from this set has the guards and bigs cross screen for each other to get open and be able to receive the inbounds pass. The screening guard should come back to the ball if the initial cutter is not open. Also, the screening big should flash to the high post to help receive the inbounds pass.

When we get the ball into one of the guards, our shooter then runs the baseline off of two staggered screens that are set by the bigs. The ball gets quickly reversed back to him in the opposite corner for an open 3-point shot, or to the flash post by the bigs who have also gone high-low. The guards up top space the floor.

If we can’t get the ball into the guards, the in-bounder calls “forward up” and the ball-side post flashes to the wing area for a give and go action with the in-bounder.

If we need a shot towards the end of the game we get into the same set, but now we hope to catch our opponents cheating. Instead of screening away, the ball side guard fakes to the ball and gets a back screen from the other guard, which he uses to loop around to the basket. At the same time, the bigs come flashing hard to the ball asking for it demonstratively. Our guard should be wide-open as they are cutting to the basket.

We’ve used this play many times to get us clutch baskets at the end of games.
