Basketball Plays | Press breakers

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Today’s basketball plays are on a Press Breakers

Here are some press breakers that could be very useful for you in the future.  There is one that the Legendary Morgan Wooten used at De Matha High School.

Plays And Diagrams

I always enjoy this time of year for the variety of basketball that we get to see. It is a great time to pick up some ideas that we may be able to implement into our programs in the future. I want to share a couple of these trends or options that I have observed.

Press breaks

Many teams are working very hard to deny the opposing teams point guard the ball after a made basket. In the past coaches prided themselves on the fact that their point guard should be able to get open. One on one I agree. What teams are doing is doubling the point guard with the inbounders defender. In Diag.1 the inbounders defender face guard 1 the point guard. What many teams aredoing to defeat this tactic is sprinting a second ball handler back from half (Diag. 2). Once the ball is in the 3 can either bring the ball himself or 4 sets a screen for 1 to cut to the ball.
