Bob Huggins 2 on 2 Sprint to help drill by Mark Chapman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Bob Huggins 2 on 2 Sprint to help drill

Today’s drill is one that was taken from Coach Bob Huggins at West Virginia.  He teaches a very intense defensive system and wants his players to react quickly as the ball is being passed.  Coach Huggins likes to have a lot of pressure and demands that all players on the floor are responsible for stopping the ball.  This drill can be used for any type of defensive philosophy with minor adjustments.  Some coaches may vary the on ball or help side defensive position but overall the drill is very effective for building the repetition into your player.

On the final part of this drill there are two different thoughts on how to defend the back-cut.  The first is that a defensive player should always see the ball so a player must slide with the cutter.  The second thought is a “pop the head” move, which is what Coach Huggins has taught.  This move keeps that defensive player chest to chest and on the cut flips from looking over the top shoulder to looking over the baseline shoulder.  If this is taught allow you players a chance to practice it before a game because it takes time for players to pick up the ball and be able to react.  This is a move that has to be learned over repetition.
