Defensive Strategies and Practice Thoughts | Scott Nagy, South Dakota State WBCA Fall Clinic, 2015 Notes
Scott Nagy, 21st season at SDSU
- Helped lead SDSU in transition from successful DII program to DI level.
Focus on OER (Offensive Efficiency Ratio) & DER (Defensive Efficiency Ratio)
- Last season, 1st in League in OER
- Shot 40% from 3 as a team
Recruit offensive players so that they can focus on teaching defense in practice.
- Let their players play and create on the offensive side of the ball
Tape practice, especially to start the season.
- Helps players see their effort level at practice
Stat as much as possible at practices
- Wants every shot to count in every drill
- Post stats often
- During summer work, asks players to stat themselves and turn into coaches
Spend time shooting FT’s and preventing teams from getting to the line
Work on not fouling.
Gave this stat:
100 possessions:
- 33% from 3 = 99 pts
- 50% from 2 = 100 pts
- 70% from FT Line (100 possessions/2 FT’s per possession) = 140 pts
- Thus it is critical to shoot more and give up fewer FT’s
Create a 10 ft. zone from the basket
- Do not give up any shots inside 10
- Contest all other shots outside the zone
Teach Defense vs. Jab Step
- Step back vs. jab step and not side to side
- Can get back to contest jumper but can’t recover from side to stop drive
Created a defensive scoring system for practice
- Teams “get” to stay on D if they stop a score.
- Points are mostly given for defensive effort
- Uses scoring system for multiple drills
- Players must “finish the play,” get a rebound but don’t travel, etc.
Scoring System:
- 1pt: Defensive Stop/get to stay on D
- 5pt: Draw Charge
- 2pt: Offensive RB – rewards offense/get to go to D/forces D to rebound whole possession
- -1pt: Foul and O gets to go to D
- -1pt: Turn Over
Have to be positive to deal with today’s athletes. Did not change his expectations but changed the way that he talks.
- “Winners don’t have to run” instead of “losers run”
- Positive not negative verbiage and environment
Offensive Scoring Game:
Will run this scoring system for certain drills
2-1-2 system
- 2pt for 3
- 1pt for mid-range
- 2pt for score inside 10ft zone
- -1pt for Turn Over
- Foul – Offense gets the ball back
Defensive Drills | Scott Nagy, South Dakota State WBCA Fall Clinic, 2015 Notes
1 on 1 Rebound to Score
- 1 on 1, 2 dribbles to score
- Lines on each wing, O&D, alternate lines
- Finish the possession inbounds
- Scoring:
- 2pt: Offensive RB
- 1pt: Score
- 1pt: Defensive Stop
- -1pt: Jump on pump fake
- -1pt: Foul
2 on 2
- Same game
- Unlimited dribbles
- Work help defensive techniques
3 on 3
- Same as above
4 on 4 Rebound
- 8 minute drill
- Goal to stay on defense
- 3 teams of 3, 4, or 5 depending on your team
- Next teams are waiting at half court and start as soon as possession ends, don’t wait for D to be ready
- Usually use Defensive Scoring Plan
- D stop = stay
- Want to stay on Defense
- Next teams starts as soon as possession ends
DER = Ture measure of a team
- May give up higher points per game than other teams, but look at the number of possessions.
Preach transition defense as key to a lower DER
- Ball ahead of you = sprint
- Jogging in practice = sprints
Transition Defense Drill
2-1-2 Scoring ½ Court Drill
- ½ court drill with offensive scoring rules
