Build your man defense by Jacob Yorg

man defense

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Today’s basketball drills are on how to build your Man Defense!

Coach Jacob Yorg has donated a playbook which is 96 pages long on how to progress your man defense.   Coach Yorg is the assistant women’s basketball coach at Maryville University.  I think that you really need to check it out.

Right now the issue at the NBA combine stems from if a player can play man defense. It’s a lost art right now. Look at Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse basketball players. Can they make the transition from a match-up 2-3 zone to man defense?

The media asked Tyler Lydon about how Syracuse basketball players could make the cut playing man defense in the NBA Combine. Here is a Syracuse guy that spent his whole career learning and practicing a 2-3 zone which they don’t play hardly at all in the NBA.

Lydon responded in saying that every Syracuse basketball player plays man-to-man defense his entire basketball career. The Orange play man defense in practice every day. Coach Boeheim thinks that his players are skilled enough to play man defense at the NBA level.

NBA coaches and scouts have made judgments about Syracuse players and their ability to defend in the NBA before. Some NBA coaches privately complain about the 2-3 match-up zone that Syracuse uses for defense. They suggest that it would be easier to scout the Orange players if they played another system.

Is it Jim Boeheim’s job to teach them how to play man defense? I don’t think so. It’s his job to win.

The NBA personnel look at how your team switches pick and rolls or do a hard hedge. They have the unique mission of scouting all the players in the world. You just have to make sure that your scouts do their “due diligence” on them.

Coach Boeheim doesn’t play much match-up zone in practice. The NBA Scouts have to watch the games and scour the country looking at players. Do a shot blocker’s skills translate to the NBA? Can that shooter make the three-point shot in the NBA. These are the judgment calls that they have to make.

College coaches try to install an offense and defense that will productive for them to win games. If Coach Boeheim thinks that playing a 2-3 match-up zone is what is best for his team, then it’s his right.

Several NBA teams like Lydon, because of his athleticism and ability to shoot the basketball. They wonder how he can guard on the wing. It won’t discourage NBA teams from taking this rookie because he might not understand man defense.  What do you think?  Let me know.

You have the chance to read 94 pages of basketball coaching information on how to build your man defense. I hope that you enjoy it.
