Brad Soderberg and Dick Bennett Packline Defense Notes
Today’s basketball coaching clinic notes are on Brad Soderberg and Dick Bennett Packline Defense. The two coaches talk about their main defensive principles. According to them, the defense should start 16-17 feet from basket. The golden rule is that no one except the guard defending on the ball goes out the PL. The only exception to this is “dead situations”. If at any time there are less than four players inside the PL, there is a problem.
The 6 main points of this defense are the following:
- It’s a Transition Defense. 1 and 2 should back every time, and the other three players should not allow offensive rebounding of the opposition.
- It’s a low post defense.
- Contain the ball.
- Defend screens.
- Use 4 on 4 drills to practice game-like defensive situations as often as possible.
- Most important of all: Never neglect the Defensive Rebounding.
Your main goal is to force your opponent to shoot over you on every possession. This will allow you to be a better defensive rebounding team, especially if you are undersized.
I hope that you enjoy learning from the master of the pack-line defense. These notes should help you out.
