Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Tips for coaching youth basketball

Introduction

When it comes to coaching youth basketball, the biggest challenge is to keep it fun and interesting for the young players. It is a very important part of player development. This will most likely be the first real basketball experience for the kids. It matters to make it a great one to set the tone for their future in basketball.

Youth basketball coaches need to inspire and create a lifelong passion in young players for the game. The main goal is to teach them in such a way that they can play anywhere with full confidence. Ask any star player of today and they will fondly tell you about their very first basketball coach from the school days.

A youth basketball coach does not have just one role in teaching the game. He will be a friend, mentor, teacher and most of all, a supporter of enthusiastic young players. This job should not be taken lightly because playing at this level will decide the future of the players in basketball.
