By winning the FIBA World Cup, USA qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games and did not have to participate in the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. The 2014 title was USA’s fifth FIBA World Cup Championship.
The roster for the 2016 Rio Olympics includes the following players: Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, Deandre Jordan, Kyle Lowry, Harrison Barnes, DeMar DeRozan, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins, Paul George, Draymond Green, and Carmelo Anthony.
Road to Rio Preview – USA National Team Set Plays – Kyrie High PNR
Option 1: In this option, the screener’s defender (x5) jumps out before the point guard approaches the screen. Seeing this adjustment by the defense, Kyrie takes the opportunity to split the defense (x1 and x5) and gets a shot in the lane.
Option 2: In their regular option, USA uses the ball-screen and allows the ballhandler to create off the dribble. If needed, the screener can re-screen or simply roll into the lane.
Road to Rio Preview – USA National Team Set Plays – Slice Opposite DHO
USA sends Klay Thompson on a slice cut to the top of the key. Kyrie keeps the ball and Klay uses a back-screen to cut to the opposite corner. As the ball is reversed, the big man gets the pass from 1 then turns to give the right wing player the ball with a dribble handoff. (another option for this play is to pass to Klay on the slice and have him use a high ball-screen).
