Continuity Pick and Roll Offense by Jerry Petitgoue

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

I remember watching coach K in a game of Dream Team against an European national team. I remember that in this game the US Team implemented a big number of pick and roll offenses in order to dominate. Pick and roll offense is crucial for any team that is looking for a team that wants to win more game. Therefore it has become one of the most important things a professional coach should teach to his team. I consider Jerry Petitgoue one of the best people to talk about the pick and roll.

Coach Jerry Petitgoue will show you his very effective continuity motion offense that will make your team extremely hard to guard.  This offense can be adjusted to easily meet your personnel and he will provide special options to get you back in your base offense.

Coach Petitgoue will teach you the movement patterns to his continuity-based pick and roll offense.  This offense will rely on multiple on ball screens, dribble pentetration, and ball reversals forcing the defense to guard you on the hardest play in basketball which is the pick and roll.  It can be used out of a 1-2-2 stack, a 1-4 set, or 2-3 set.

He will also give you some options out of this movement that will give you easy baskets.  It will involve back screens, staggered double screens, and slip screens.  You will have several entry plays that spread the floor to get easy scores.

  • “Load” and “Lift” – Attack overly aggressive defenses that hard hedge or attempt to double-team the ball handler on pick and rolls.
  • High-Low – Isolates your low post scorer within a few feet from the rim.
  • Guard’s Choice – A deceptive play that provides the ball handler with several passing options for a quick score. There are also weak side duck-in opportunities available.
