Basketball Plays | Loyola Md Smothering Defense vs Iona’s Incredible Offense Scouting Report

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Scouting college basketball plays (Loyola vs Iona)

Two teams with contrasting styles who both play to a high level will always result in a game with many interesting basketball plays.  When Loyola Maryland took on Iona in an entertaining college basketball game, we saw one team with a great defense take on another team with a high-powered offense.  Many fans and coaches alike will tell you that the best defense can stop most offensive basketball plays, so who triumphed in this game?  And does this one game define the belief that defense wins championships?

In the end, both offense and defense won out on the day, and you can get the account of all the fascinating basketball plays if you buy this scouting book report on the game.  Defense leads to offense, especially fast break points, and Loyola Maryland was able to capitalize on this as they went on a few big runs.  They also held Iona’s great offense to 40% shooting, though they did allow them to hit 7 three-pointers.  After a tough battle, Loyola triumphed, but it was still a high-scoring game.  So they were forced to play Iona’s style, and while they let them hit too many free-throws, their aggressive defense was able to make the most important basketball plays of the game.

Iona loves to score, and they use their guard play to open up the game for the inside players.  They play with three guards and love to use their basketball plays to put up shots early in the shot clock.  Their system opens up opportunities for their star forward to score and dominate.  Loyola, on the other hand, actually do pretty well on offense themselves, but their focus is a defense that holds opponents to low field goal percentages and not many points.  They let their defense and steals lead to chances for their offensive basketball plays to score.

So, in this game, offense took center-stage as both teams scored a lot, but Loyola was able to edge the game because of their impressive defense which disrupted the basketball plays of Iona.  Both teams were able to put forth a good showing and gave their best effort.  There are many interesting strategies and defensive and offensive sets to learn by analyzing this game.  You can get the breakdown on all the fascinating basketball plays if you take a look at this scouting report book.  You will see how Loyola was able to just edge out Iona’s offense enough to win, and capitalize on Iona’s poor defensive showing on the day.
