I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Tommy Jones TLU Bulldogs Offense by Wes Kosel

Here are 5 box set plays from former Texas Lutheran Head Coach Tommy Jones. Coach Jones served as the head coach at TLU from 2007-2014. Before that, Jones was the Head Coach at Houston Baptist from 1985 – 1989. During that time, HBU was a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference (now the Atlantic Sun). Member of the former TAAC included Oklahoma City University, UTPA, Northeast Louisiana University, Hardin-Simmons, Centenary, Samford, Northwestern State, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Georgia Southern. Jones also served as an assistant coach at the University of Houston and Rice. He got his collegiate coaching start as a graduate assistant under Don Haskins at UTEP. He also coached at the JUCO and high school level during his coaching career.

1 dribbles to the right as 2 screens for 3 then screens for 5 at the elbow. 1 looks inside to 5 posting up. If 5 isn’t open, 4 screens for 2 who cuts to the 3-point line for a shot.

Both 4 and 5 screen down for 3 and 2 at the blocks. 1 dribbles to the right wing then passes to 2 who passes to 3. Once 3 has the ball, he dribbles left looking to pass inside to 4 posting up or to 5 flashing to the high post.

Tommy Jones TLU Bulldogs Offense – Black
1 dribbles right then passes to 5 stepping out to the top of the key. 3 cuts out to the wing and gets the ball from 5. 3 can then look to drive or can pass to 2 cutting up off of a staggered down-screen.

1 passes to 2 cutting to the wing off of a down-screen from 4. 1 then screens away for 3 and 5 flashes to the high post.

Tommy Jones TLU Bulldogs Offense – Brown
1 passes to 3 on the wing then moves opposite. 2 clears to the left corner. 5 and 4 set a staggered ball-screen for 3. 3 can attack middle looking for 5 on the roll or if he gets pushed out he can look to pass to 4 flaring to the wing off of a screen from 5.

Wes Kosel just completed his first year as an assistant coach for men’s basketball under Head Coach Andy Partee at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Kosel joined the staff at Colorado College after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University and one season at Haskell Indian Nations University. Kosel has an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from the University of Kansas and a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Houston. The Bartlesville, OK native is also a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT), and taught weight training and aerobic fitness courses while coaching at Texas Lutheran. He has coached AAU programs, volunteered with elementary and middle school basketball teams, and has worked basketball camps for various programs including the Houston Rockets, USA Basketball, University of Houston, Texas State, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
