Here are three zone set plays from Yale Bulldogs Head Coach James Jones. Jones and his Bulldogs had a big upset win in the 2016 NCAA Tournament beating #5 Seed Baylor in the first round. Yale went 23-7 this past season including a 13-1 record in the Ivy League. Jones has been at Yale for 17 seasons and has gone from 7 wins in his first season as Head Coach to 23 wins in 2016. The past two seasons he has a 45-17 combined record. Before becoming the head coach at Yale, Jones was an assistant at Albany (1990-1995), Yale (1995-1997), and Ohio (1997-1999). He won the Hugh Durham Award in 2016 and has been named the Ivy League Coach of the Year in back to back seasons (2015 and 2016).
Yale Bulldogs Zone Set Plays from the NCAA Tournament
This playbook has three plays that Yale used to beat Scott Drew’s Baylor zone defense.
Zone Horns Twist
Yale runs a twist action with 5 setting a ball screen for 1 to go left and 4 following to have 1 dribble right. The action is designed to get x2 to jump out as x1 guards the ball leaving 4 open on the wing for a shot.
Zone Rocket
4 rolls hard into the lane and as the ball is thrown back to 5, 4 ducks in to the post defender hard.
Zone Slot
Yale again uses a ball screen against the zone, this time with a slot ball screen. As the screen is set, the Bulldogs want x2 to have to help on 1 turning the corner. If this happens, x4 will have to help up on 3 (who is shot ready) leaving 2 open in the corner for a shot. If x4 tries to stay down in the corner, 3 should be open for a shot or drive.
