Third Time is the Charm for Virgina Tech Hokies by Chris Filios

Virgina Tech Hokies

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Third Time is the Charm for Virgina Tech Hokies by Chris Filios

In what was the most exciting game on Sunday, Virginia Tech Hokies; Seth Allen made his 3rd opportunity at being the hero for the Hokies count.

Seth Allen hit a short jumper in the paint with 3.2 seconds left in the second overtime, and the Virginia Tech Hokies beat No. 12 Virginia, 80-78.

The winner came after Allen missing on a driving attempt at the end of regulation, but Ty Outlaw’s tip-in with 1 second left for the Virginia Tech Hokies forced overtime. In OT, the Virginia Tech Hokies, down 3 with a little less than a minute to play, hit a huge three-pointer to tie the basketball game with 46 seconds left. Things got bizarre, with 21 seconds left, Virginia’s London Perrantes drove for what appeared to be a go-ahead layup, but the ball bounced on the basketball rim, rolled around and died on the board. The officials called a jump ball; the Virginia Tech Hokies had the possession arrow. There, Allen tried it again, but his shot at the buzzer was off the mark, forcing the second extra period.

Finally, in the 2nd overtime, the third time was the charm. Allen’s shot ended a fantastic rivalry game in which the Hokies trailed almost throughout, but Outlaw’s lone basket extended the game, the magical lid on the rim kept Perrantes lead-grabbing layup out, and finally Allen’s game-winner gave the Hokies the big win.

Allen, who led the Hokies with 22 points, broke a 78-all tie when Seth Allen pulled up a few feet from the rim and made the shot over the top of the Cavalier defender.

It’s a big win for the Virginia Tech Hokies in what has been a momentum-building season for Buzz Williams team. The win moves the Hokies to 6-6 in a very competitive and wide open ACC race, and 17-7 overall. Most importantly, he has his team in a good position to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995, when they were members of the Atlantic 10 conference.
