Video Playbook – Northern Iowa Panthers by Wes Kosel
Below is a video breakdown of Northern Iowa Panthers in a game against Wichita State during the 2014-2015 season. Last season, the Northern Iowa Panthers went 31-4 (the best of Coach Jacobson’s career). Ben Jacobson has been the head coach of UNI since 2006-2007. In that time, he has won over 200 games and has had no losing seasons. Before taking over as the head coach, Jacobson was an assistant at Northern Iowa from 2001-2006. Before that, he was an assistant at North Dakota State and North Dakota. He has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year three times (2009, 2010, 2015).
Northern Iowa Panthers Video Playbook – Horns Loop Pin Down
UNI got an open shot in the lane with this play. He missed the shot, but 4 was able to get the offensive rebound and score.
Northern Iowa Panthers Video Playbook – 1-4 High Cross Screen Post Up
This is a nice misdirection play with 2 running to the corner once 4 gets the ball at the elbow. 4 makes a nice pass to 2 in the corner and on film you can see 5 moving his man up the lane line to create space for the post pass.
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – Iverson Stagger Flare
This play ended up with an open shot on the wing off of the flare-screen. This is a great way to move out of staggered screens and forces the defense to pick who to guard (3 on the initial cut or 5 on the flare).
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – BLOB Weak Stagger
1 turned down the screen and drove baseline, but was still able to find 2 on the wing for a shot.
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – UCLA Throw Back
This is a good combination action that spreads the defense out. The initial ball-screen is hard enough to guard, but when you add the throw back and the down screen on the weak side it becomes really hard to guard effectively.
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – Box Back-Screen Down-Screen
UNI went to this play several times in the game. Most of the time, they ended up with an open look for 3 at the top of the key.
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – Pick and Pop Drive
Coach Jacobson has solid bigs who can stretch the floor. This play looked like a deliberate drive and kick call. 5 found 2 wide open for a 3-point shot in the corner.
Northern Iowa Video Playbook – Handoff Cross Post Up
This is a good play to make defenders chase. Before cutting off of the cross-screen from 1, 5 acts as if he is screening for 2 in the corner as a misdirection.
