UTEP Don Haskins Double Post Offense by Wes Kosel

Bo Ryan Wisconsin Badgers Offense

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

UTEP Don Haskins Double Post Offense

Here is a double post offense with four options from legendary Coach Don Haskins. Don Haskins coached at the University of Texas at El Paso (formerly Texas Western) from 1961 – 1999. Coach Haskins won a National Championship in 1966, and several WAC conference titles. Haskins posted a 719-353 record for his career.

At Texas Lutheran University, I am an assistant for Head Coach Tommy Jones. Jones was a graduate assistant for Coach Haskins in the 70’s. Jones has said many times how Coach Haskins emphasized allowing his offense to just “play”. This double post offense allows the guards to “play” with ball screens to penetration and pitch opportunities. In option 1, 3 is encouraged to penetrate off of the ball screen. If 3 cannot get an open shot, then a pass to 1 coming off of the down screen should be open. From here, 1 has the option to take his man to the basket, or pass to 5 cutting to the basket. In option 2, 4 has the freedom to take his man to the basket with the same down screen option to 1 open if 4 cannot get a shot. This is a good option if your power forward is more athletic than his defender, as the defense is spread out leaving 4 and his defender one on one. if 1 cannot get the ball to the wing, option 3 has him dribble out 3. 3 cuts to the opposite side of the lane, and 4 screens for 5 who cuts to the corner. If 1 can turn the corner on the dribble he can take it to the basket, or if 5 is open in the corner 1 can pass it there. In option 4, a triple screen is set for both 2 and 1. 2 dribbles at the triple screen and 1 cuts off of it to the opposite corner. If 2 can turn the corner to the basket he should, or he can pass to 1 in the corner for an open shot.

This double post offense utilizes penetration from the 1, 2, 3 and 4 positions and sets up penetrate-pitch opportunities if the defense stops the penetration. Don Haskins was a college basketball legend.

I hope you enjoy this play.
