Utah Jazz Summer League 2017

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Summer league gives us our first chance to watch the newly drafted players, as well as many 2nd NBA players, G-League players looking to make the jump up, and free agents looking to show good enough skills to land an NBA contract.

A few of the 1st round draft pick names that participated in the Utah Jazz Summer League 2017 were:

So did the Boston Celtics make a mistake in trading the Number one NBA Draft pick last month and any chance of landing Markelle Fultz? It’s a tough question to answer which could take a couple of years to evaluate that decision.

The Jazz was hoping for Dante Exum to stand out in summer league play since he was their lone lottery pick from the 2014 draft. It’s an unusual position as he tries to find a secure place in the Utah Jazz rotation for this next season.

Is Markelle Fultz the latest puzzle piece for the Philadelphia 76’ers rebuild?

Fultz has always downplayed the idea that he would use Boston’s decision to move down in the draft to be a chip on his shoulder. He says that he is motivated to prove that Philadelphia makes the right choice by taking him the number one player in the NBA Draft.

Once the Boston Celtics moved back three spots, they selected Jayson Tatum, Duke Forward. Danny Ainge has always maintained that moving back allowed the Celtics to add future assets. The Boston Celtics get the Lakers 2018 first round pick if it lands on the number two and five selections in the next year’s lottery. Otherwise, Boston will get the Kings’ 2019 first round pick, unless it’s the number one pick in which the Celtics would get the 76’ers pick that year.

Jayson Tatum is known for his offensive skills. He became an internet sensation after making ten straight 3 pointers in a post practice shooting contest with Jaylen Brown. The Celtics think that Tatum’s long term potential is great and that he can develop on the defensive side of the floor with his length.

Philadelphia hasn’t had Joel Embiid or Ben Simmons on their Utah Jazz Summer League 2017 roster just leaving Fultz and their 2016 first round pick Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to headline this squad.

The Boston Celtics Summer League roster is full of draft picks. Jaylen Brown was on the All-Rookie second team this NBA season, and a consistent presence during the Boston Celtic’s NBA playoff run.

The Boston Celtics’ roster also has the 2016 first round pick Ante Zizic, who played for David Blatt in Turkey last year. The Celtics think that the twenty-year-old Croatian will be a rotation guy and provide defensive rebounding plus toughness up front.
