UMBC Coach Ryan Odom is so glad that his dad didn’t give him the silver spoon that some coaches do for their sons in the college coaching ranks. Ryan Odom’s father is Dave Odom that coached at Wake Forest and is known for being Tim Duncan’s college coach. Dave Odom never his son and forced his son to earn whatever he got in coaching. It’s something that UMBC Coach Ryan Odom loves that his dad did that for him.

They didn’t have the father and son coaching experience, but it allowed him to get experience under other outstanding coaches and gain new ideas, styles, and experiences which helped him in the past 2018 NCAA Tournament run.

UMBC Coach Ryan Odom found himself in the middle of March Madness when his 16th-seed UMBC Retrievers beat the No. 1 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. They dominated Tony Bennett and Virginia, 74-54 to advance to play ninth-seeded Kansas State. Now Ryan Odom is going from coach’s son to hot coaching prospect in college basketball.

Ryan Odom was hired by UMBC in April 2016 after serving as the head coach at Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) University in 2015-16. UMBC senior guard Jairus Lyles sees a lot of Dave Odom in his coach. He encourages them to turn the page and focus on the here and now. He does a great job of focusing on what is in front of him.
