Team USA “Wave” Series by Wes Kosel

The United States Men’s National Team won Gold for the third straight Olympics yesterday by beating Serbia 96-66. In group play, Serbia had held the United States to a three point game, 94-91 leading many to question if USA could win the gold again. The United States now has won 25 straight games in the Olympics and 53 games in major competitions. USA went 8-0 to secure Goild, Serbia finished 4-4 with the Silver, and Spain went 5-3 for Bronze (beating Australia in the Bronze Medal game).

Kevin Durant led the team in scoring with 30 points, followed by DeMarcus Cousins with 13 and Klay Thompson with 12. DeMarcus Cousins also had 15 rebounds, 6 of those offensive. The United States finally pulled away in the second quarter outscoring Serbia 33-14 followed by a big third quarter as well (outscoring Serbia 27-14). Carmelo Anthony capped his Olympic career being the first three-time Olympic Gold medalist in US history. The plays below from Team USA feature two plays out of the “wave” series.

USA Gold Medal Offense

United States – Wave Curl

Kevin Durant uses a down screen from DeAndre Jordan and curls into the lane for a shot. This is a difficult action for Serbia to defend with the size of Jordan and Durant. With Durant’s length, he only needs a little space to get ahead of the defender and can pull up for a shot without it being contested.

United States – Wave Pinch Post

In this counter option, Durant curls the screen but pops out to the wing instead of getting the ball. Klay Thompson clears to the right corner and DeMarcus Cousins flashes to the pinch post. USA can then play any number of actions off of the pinch post player.
