Stan Van Gundy Detroit Pistons Set Plays by Wes Kosel
Here are three set plays from Detroit Pistons Head Coach Stan Van Gundy. The Pistons went 44-38 this season after going 32-50 in 2014-2015. The Pistons made the NBA Playoffs, but lost to the eventual champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Van Gundy has been with the Pistons for two seasons. Before that, he has been the head coach of the Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, Wisconsin Badgers, UMass Lowell, and Castleton. He has served as an assistant coach at Vermont, Canisius, Fordham, Wisconsin, and with the Miami Heat.
The video shows three plays that Detroit used to score against Cleveland in the NBA Playoffs. The first two plays are out of Van Gundy’s horns series which has the point guard set a down screen in the corner.
Detroit Pistons Set Plays
Horns Chicago
The point guard passes to 5 at the high post then cuts around 5 to set a down screen in the corner for 3. 3 cuts around the screen and loops around 5 to take the ball on a handoff.
Horns Over the Top Flip
This play is a counter to the first with 3 making a back cut to the rim instead of using the down screen. The point guard then pops out to the wing to get the ball. 5 acts as if he is setting a ball screen for 1 to drive middle but instead flips for 1 to drive baseline.
BLOB Up Double
In this screen the screener play, the point guard set a back screen for 3 in the lane then cuts off of a staggered screen to the right corner for a shot. If nothing is there, the point guard can use a ball screen from the big.
