I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Coach Van Gundy began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Vermont back in 1981 before his first college head coaching job at Castleton State College where he held this position for three years. After serving as an assistant coach at Canisius College in 1987 and Fordham University in 1988, Van Gundy was named head coach at the University of Lowell where he spent his next four years. University of Wisconsin was the last stop of his collegiate career from 1992-1995 after which he accepted his first assistant coaching role in the NBA for the Miami Heat. He became head coach of the Heat after coach Pat Riley resigned abruptly. Coach Van Gundy surprised many by advancing of the second round of the NBA playoffs in 2004. The following season the Heat advanced to the eastern conference finals and lost to Detroit Pistons in 7 games. During 2006 season coach Van Gundy resigned from his position for personal reasons. Two years later he accepted an offer from the Orlando Magic to be their head coach and in his first season he led them to 52 victories. More success was found in the 2008–09 season. The Magic won 59 games, second most in franchise history, along with a second consecutive division championship. After defeating the team with the league’s best record that season, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Magic won the Eastern Conference Finals in six games, advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1995 to face the Los Angeles Lakers, but lost the series in five games. On May 21, 2012, Van Gundy was relieved of his duties as Head Coach, despite making the playoffs in all five seasons as coach. In May 2014, coach Van Gundy was hired as the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons and president of basketball operations.
