St. Bonaventure BLOB Corner Handoff by Wes Kosel

Here is a baseline out of bounds play used by St. Bonaventure Head Coach Mark Schmidt. Schmidt is in his 10th season as head coach of St. Bonaventure and in that time has won 146 games. Before coming to St. Bonaventure in 2007, Schmidt was the head coach at Robert Morris from 2001-2007 and increased his win total in 6 years winning 82 games during that time. Last season, St. Bonaventure put together its best regular season in Schmidt’s tenure going 22-9 and just missing out on the NCAA Tournament. This year, St. Bonaventure is 1-0 with a 92-82 win over St. Francis (PA). The Bonnies take on Florida tonight and Arkansas Little Rock next week as part of the HEB Center Lone Star Showcase. Schmidt played at Boston College and after his playing career he became an assistant with Saint Michael’s, Penn State, Loyola (MD), and Xavier before taking the head job at Robert Morris. He was named the 2016 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.

St. Bonaventure BLOB Offense

BLOB Corner Handoff

The play starts with a screen in from 2 for 4. 1 passes to 4 cutting out to the corner and then sprints to the corner to get a quick handoff. Often the defensive man guarding 1 (the inbounder) will help off of the screening action putting him behind as 1 cuts to the corner. As 1 turns the corner he uses a ball screen from 5 stepping over. 2 clears away to the opposite side of the floor leaving room for 5 or 4 to roll to the rim on 1’s drive. If 1 isn’t open on the handoff, he can cut off of 5 and then 4 can use the ball screen from 5 in the corner. 1 may be open on the flare by 5 as well.
