45 minute, 4 player skill development workout by Nathan Hill

This off=season our team has begun our 4 player skill development workout that lasts for 45 minutes. After the 45 minutes is over the group goes to the weight room for a 45 minute workout. The attached document is a breakdown of the drill list. I have listed 8 drills at 5 minutes each. We may go long on some, and shorter on others, so I have 5 minutes of free time worked in.

1. 5 minutes: First 45 shooting (shooting warmup): We will warm up with a form shooting variation working on form, balance, shooting off the catch, off the dribble, and reading the defender. This will take about 5 minutes.

2. 5 minutes – Layup series (dribbling warmup): A series of layups / rim finishes that incorporate ball handling and using both hands. These are game type shots that get our players moving. Also game like ball handling moves instead of stationary dribbling.

3. 5 minutes – transition passing and shooting (passing warmup): These drills are designed to get your players working of dump off passes to the post, and hitting open players on the drive. We will have coaches stand in different spots – opposite block, opposite corner, opposite wing, and ball side corner and wings.

4. 5 minutes– competitive layups (rim finishes): We give the offensive player the advantage, and have the offensive finish at the rim with both hands versus a defense. We want players to be able to finish around the basket with both hands.

5. 5 minutes – 2v2 closeouts (defensive fundamentals): We now move to a competitive 2 on 2 drill, and stress proper closeouts and communication. Coaches can simulate different screening actions and different rotations.

6. 5 minutes – Star shooting (game situation shooting): Individual shooting drill with a time and score. Each player can compete against themselves or any player at the workout.

7. 5 minutes – 2 ball shooting (game situation shooting): teams of 2 shoot against each other for a score to win the drill. Again, teams can compete against themselves or others for a time and score.

8. 5 minutes – 4 minutes of 3’s (team shooting): Players compete as a team and shoot shots from different spots on the floor. This is timed and they keep score to compete against themselves and others.
