I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Sideline Out of Bounds Play
“Special” by Mark Chapman

This Sideline Out of Bounds Play was posted recently and I really like how it was set up for a late game situation. It can be run for a quick bucket inside or an extension to the play to get a three if down by three. As with any play make sure that you have multiple guys ready to run different positions because late in a game you may have a specific player fouled out and others must be ready to step in an filled the vacant spot.

On the diagram I have position numbers but I’m going to describe where players should be based on the skill they possess. The player inbounding should be your best passer and player that can see the floor the best. This play can be risky, if the defense recognizes what’s coming, the pass can be picked off and you won’t get a shot off.

I put the three man on the ball side block and he should be able to catch in traffic, finish inside if needed, or pass with defense pressuring. The best inside threat that is your post player should be on the backside block. The best screener you have should be ball side elbow and the best shooter I put on the back side elbow.

Both ball side players set a screen across with the post player cutting hard to the ball side block and the shooter cutting to the wing on a delayed screen. *If the ball can’t be entered to the three man (defense sniffs out the pass) then the ball should be entered to the two guard on the wing.

First look for a score is to the three man inside. If your team needs a game tying three then the five man sets a flare screen for the shooter rolling to the backside wing for a quick shot.
This Sideline Out of Bounds Play should be run with five seconds or less on the clock and all players should be told to crash as soon as the shot goes up!
