Sherri Coale Practice Planning: “Little Things that Matter”

Sherri Coale Practice Planning Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Sherri Coale Practice Planning: “Little Things That Matter”

In these basketball coaching clinic notes, you can see coach Sherri Coale practice planning main notions. Coach Coale discusses the importance of practice planning, drill consistency, using a positive approach and non-stop communication. By using the “echo technique” Coale’s team repeats her instructions during the entire practice, keeping them all on the same page. On the court, the “North Carolina fast break” drill is an important activity in Sooner practices. This single drill requires players to listen, communicate, run, pass, catch, make lay-ups and fill spots on the floor. “Walking the arch” is another small detail that produces big results. This strategy is a technique used by cutters to get open using screens. Instead of using the V-cut, “Walking the arch” helps spacing on the perimeter and gets shooters open.

Other techniques demonstrated include the slip screen, blocking out for better rebounding, post player techniques, the “fake a pass to make a pass” and the “X” passing drill, which emphasizes communication, squaring to the ball and making good passes. Offensively, Sherri Coale shares five pressure release options that are an important part of their motion offense. 12 Little Things That Matter will challenge your philosophy and give you some valuable nuggets for your program!
