Shaka Smart Texas Longhorns Shooting Drills Program By Erick Blasing

What a crazy year in the Big 12!   I want to share the Shaka Smart Texas Longhorns Shooting Drills with you.  The Kansas Jayhawks and Oklahoma Sooners have served as the #1 ranked teams only to lose in conference shortly after. West Virginia, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State have all had victories over the Sooners or the Jayhawks and they also have one more commonality…they lost to Shaka Smart and the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns 12-6 overall record and 4-2 Big 12 conference record is finally starting to show that the Texas players are buying in and following first year head coach Shaka Smart. Coach Smart, however, makes it easy for players to buy in.  This packet of Shaka Smart Texas Longhorns Shooting Drills will show you what they run in his program.  His legendary enthusiasm and relationship building helps Coach Smart push his players further than they have probably ever been pushed.

On Wednesday night, 1/20/16, Texas defeated the 6th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on the road in a confidence building 56-49 victory. The Longhorns showed persistence and the ability to overcome adversity in the victory over another top 25 ranked opponent. The Longhorns will now have to take this momentum on the road as they head to Lawrence, Kansas for a date with the Jayhawks on Saturday. The back to back road games vs. top 10 ranked opponents marks the first time since the 11-12 season that Texas have consecutive games against top 10 ranked opponents and the first time in program history that Texas has had true road contests vs. top 10 ranked teams.

While I would love to be in the locker room for the Longhorns and see  Coach Shaka Smart Texas Longhorns Shooting Drills program first hand, I don’t envy their challenge ahead in the next couple of weeks. The Longhorns up to this point are currently averaging 74.8 ppg while only allowing 69.1. The team is currently also shooting 44% from the field while only allowing opponents to shoot 40%. In 3pt shots, the team is currently shooting 34.9% while allowing 33.9% from opponents. These number bode well for the Longhorns up through the halfway point in the season. Combine this with a slight rebounding advantage and a +2.3 turnover margin the Longhorns could be the team to make noise in the Big 12 down the stretch.

Despite being outshot by 20 attempts (61-41) the Longhorns somehow came away with the solid road win in Morgantown. The Mountaineers helped Texas’s cause by shooting 31% from the field, 14% from 3, and only 35% from the FT line. The Longhorns countered with 39% from the field, 40% from 3, and 60% from the line. Texas’s ball control also helped to secure the Longhorn victory. Entering the game, Texas had only committed 19 total turnovers in the past three contests. “Press Virginia” did not fare much better as the Longhorns only committed a solid 6 turnovers on the night (8 fewer than the lowest forced turnover game by the Mountaineers this season).

The timely shooting for the Longhorns in this game is a testament to the players and coaches efforts. The attached Shaka Smart Texas Longhorns Shooting Drills workout is something that Texas has used this season to help strengthen and increase their ability to shoot from the field. I hope this helps you knock off some top 10 opponents this season! Good luck and don’t forget to enjoy the journey! – Erick
