Shaka Smart 2015 TABC Clinic Notes

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

Shaka Smart TABC Clinic Notes – Part 1

The Shaka Smart TABC Clinic Notes do a great job of breaking down pressure defense in the half court and full court situations. I think that you will love the Shaka Smart TABC Clinic Notes – Part 1.

Shaka Smart as USA Under-18 Coach

Shaka Smart is the United States Olympic Under-18 Head Coach this year and reporters caught up with him in Colorado Springs. He was finally getting over how the Texas Longhorns lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to the University of Northern Iowa. Forward Paul Jesperson from Northern Iowa banked in a half court buzzer beating heave to beat them. They said that Coach Smart looked more cheerful these days.

Coach Smart finished up his first recruiting class at Texas with a great prize. That prize is Jarrett Allen, a skilled, slender, 6’10” 220-pound center. Allen was selected to be a McDonald’s All-American following his senior season at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin. He was just one of two longhorn freshman that were invited to the trials. The other one was James Banks, a sturdy 6’11” center from Georgia. Both of them made the first cut among the 18 finalists who will resume trainign next month in Houston to make the final 12 man roster.

Shaka Smart and Recruiting

Given that Texas lost seven of it’s tweleve scholarship players from last season, it was HUGE that Smart landed a class full of quantity and quality. He came from VCU where he had a very sucessful six year tenure that was highlighted by a trip to the 2011 Final Four. He has to prove that he can recruit well enough to keep Texas competitive in the Big 12. He didn’t let a guy from Austin especially when the kid is a McDonald’s All-American.

Coach Smart has a knack for building relationships and finding ways that guys relate to him. Trust is the key in recruiting. When he was at VCU, he found “wild dogs” that didn’t have many offers and had chips on their shoulders. It’s going to be harder to recruit the Top 30 players that he needs to compete on the national level in the Big 12. People were going to negative recruit him quite a bit and that’s what happened in his first recruiting season.

I think that you are going to see Shaka Smart and the Texas Longhorns on the rise in the next couple seasons.
