Serbian Blob from the World University Games by Erick Blasing
The 2015 World University Games is international basketball and it’s a different style of basketball given the slight variation on certain rules, a wider lane and a 24 second shot clock.
In the final game of pool play at the World University Games, Serbia dug deep for the BLOB that set up a potential game winning shot. The play worked to perfection and seemed to give Serbia the advantage with a mere 40 seconds remaining in the game. However, Wayne Selden hit a clutch three and with the score tied at 65-65, and Kansas looking for the game-winning basket, the Serbian team intentionally fouled Kansas Guard Wayne Selden, putting him at the free throw lane. Selden made one of the two free throws and the serbian team came up empty in their final chances. Kansas, which is representing the United States at the international tournament, move to 4-0 in Gwangju, South Korea.
With the game tied at 62 and under a minute to play, Serbia came out of a timeout with the perfect play to fool the US defense. Placing a clutch shooter as the inbounder, Serbia set up a beautiful screen the screener action and caught the defense off guard. After inbounding the ball, the inbounder steps to the block and sets a backscreen for a post player coming from the wing area. The defense not wanting to give up the lead due to a layup over helps on the play and allows a pin down screen coming from the lane line extended to give the inbounder an open 3 point attempt. In this given game, the Serbian shooter buries the 3pt shot and nearly leads his team to victory.
This baseline out of bounds play works perfectly if you have a shooter able to come off screens with ease and is a great play in a tight situation late in the game. The action of screen the screener is brilliant and at the right time can catch the defense off guard and led to the open look that Serbia received at their pivotal point vs. USA in the World University Games. I hope this helps you team squeak out a close one down the stretch. Enjoy!
